Turtle Love!

Hey Y’all!
Well, school is back in session… like you couldn’t tell from my absence on the blog! No matter how hard I try at the beginning of each year, the start of school always gets the best of me. This year has been very overwhelming and some of the pain that I was having last September has come back, which is a little scary. But. I recognized the signs and went into my arsenal and started taking care of myself a little bit better. I am drinking more water and getting lots of sleep. I am also taking my vitamins and trying to eat well. So let’s hope I don’t have a repeat of last year!
I am very blessed this year in that I have a VERY sweet class. I just love my students this year. They love to learn and BONUS.. the love hearing about Paddington, so that just makes my day. My furry baby has been alright with my return to school. During our first two weeks back, during inservice days, I tried to come home for lunch everyday. I think that helped him a bit. Paddington still throws a temper tantrum when I leave in the morning, but he is not licking any hotspots on himself which is an improvement from last year. He is just dropping his toys in the bathtub. But. I will take that!
Over the summer you may have seen on the Reads From the Beach Chair that I keep at the top of the blog that I have been reading several books by Mary Alice Monroe. Mary Alice Monroe is an author from SC and she is very involved in Sea Turtle rescue and Sea Turtle nest monitoring. After reading her books this summer, it helped me realize that this is a project that I would like to become involved in. And. I have!
Y’all know that I am very passionate about animals and I have followed S.C.U.T.E (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) for a while on Facebook. During Open House a few weeks ago, several of my former students came back to visit with me. One of those parents is very active in S.C.U.T.E. and invited me to a nest inventory that was happening later on that week. A nest inventory happens 72 hours after a sea turtle nest has “boiled” or hatched. During the inventory, they count how many eggs hatched, didn’t hatch and they look to see if there are any turtle hatchlings stragglers. If there are stragglers, then we help them get to the ocean. You form two long parallel lines and watch over the hatchlings. It is very important that the hatchlings walk to the ocean as this gives them time to “imprint” and stretch their muscles for the long swim to the Gulf Stream.
Let me tell you. Once you have seen a turtle hatchling lift their head and get a whiff of ocean air and then scurry to the water, you are not the same person. This has been happening for thousands of years and you are a part of it.  It is a wonderful thing to be a part of! Here are some pics from the nest inventories I have been to.

Next Summer I am going to volunteer with S.C.U.T.E. and walk the beaches a few mornings a week to look for turtle tracks and nests. I wanted to do it this past summer, but couldn’t due to class stuff. I am so excited about this!
Well, let me run!
Tomorrow we are back to school! Tootles!

A Calendar of Days

Hey Y'all!

Well. I am more than ready for 2012! As you can see I have plenty of calendars! One is for my dining area that is the Farmer's Almanac one. One is a knitting one... of course! Another one is all about weather (OF COURSE) and the last one is for my kitchen... a Food Network one! My Mom gave me the Food Network one for Christmas, and the other 3 I picked up for half off. I have a sneaking suspicion that my weather one may make it's way to school. Each day is packed with weather facts and I know my kids will LOVE that!

I have been busy today tying up loose ends. I have to go back to work tomorrow and I had a few minor things around the house that I wanted to take care of. It is funny how things bother you and weigh you down. I washed the rugs on all of the bathroom floors today, changed the sheets on my bed, steamed my floors, vacuumed, updated a few computers with a few things, updated my Ravelry database with my finished knitting projects for the past year and a half and walked Pitty Pat. It doesn't seem like it is alot, but I am tired!

Pitty Pat is in a little denial about me returning to work tomorrow. He has started hoarding his toys on the chair in the living room.

In other news, I casted on yesterday for my first knitting project of 2012! It is called Scrunch Scarf. The pattern is by Susan B. Anderson, one of my favorite designers. You knit this scarf with thick yarn and size 15 needles. Then for the "scrunch" part you use size 11 needles and rapidly decrease. It is a lot of fun to knit and it is very cool to see it grow and come together. I am using the color Honolulu Pink to knit this up. My how I wish I was in Hawaii!

Anyhoo, with me returning to work this week I will try to update as much as possible. I didn't really cook much over Christmas break... well I did, just not anything new! I am such a creature of habit! I hope to bring y'all some more yummy recipes in 2012! I have a new cookbook that has given me LOTS of ideas and inspiration. Stay tuned!

I want to leave y'all with a picture that I think sums up my 2011 perfectly... Toes and paws in the sand!!!

Tootles! I hope y'all are staying warm tonight.... it has finally turned REALLY chilly here at the beach!

Happy New Year- 2012

Hey Y'all!

I hope everyone enjoyed the last days of 2011 and had a wonderful New Year's celebration! Pitty Pat and I spent the last hours of 2011 on the beach... BIG SURPRISE! We have been lucky here in Myrtle Beach, our weather has been unseasonably warm. We are taking advantage of it while it lasts. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be in the 40's!

I LOVE this view!!!

Pitty Pat has turned into quite the explorer on the beach! He will go near the water now. He was checking out a shell in this picture. :)

In knitting news, I have to show y'all my last finished object for 2011. This is the Hannah Hat... that I have named the Beachcomber Hat. It keeps my ears warm and toasty on our beach walks when they are chilly. This pattern was great and I knit up this hat in one night! Sorry for the scary picture! Pitty Pat doesn't know how to work the camera on the Blackberry... YET! :)

Anyhoo, I started of the New Year by heading to church this morning, followed by a lunch of Hoppin' John and Collards. I don't want to tempt fate! I am not making "resolutions" per say this year. But, I figure, just in case the Mayans ARE right, I plan to do something I love everyday. You can't go wrong with that. How about y'all?

I am off for my first nap of 2012!

Beachcombers.. Part 2

Hey Y'all!

I hope that each one of you had a wonderful Christmas holiday! We are still enjoying our holiday decorations, I just can't find the heart to take them down! Although, I think my live tree will have to come down tomorrow. It is VERY dry. I am nervous about the lights on it. But, I plan on leaving up my cupcake tree and other artificial tree for a while. I just love the lights!

Today started out gloomy, doomy and rainy. I met my Uncle Richard and Aunt Brenda for lunch and then came home to settle in for a nap. When I woke up from my nap, this is what I saw. LAZY!

Luckily, the sun had just made an appearance. I grabbed Pitty Pat's leash, Mitzi Mazda's keys and we hit the road. I felt a beach walk coming on!

Today was a little cool, but Pitty Pat had his fur and I had on a fleece jacket. I was quite toasty and Pitty Pat had a ball!

Things we saw on our walk today:
1. A WEDDING! I didn't want to take a picture, but Pitty Pat and I were witnesses. It was very sweet! Pitty Pat even sat through the 10 minute service!

2. A TREASURE HUNTER! I hope that he finds something good!

3. A FEATHER. It was cool. Pitty Pat chased it down the beach!

4. The beach was really flat today. Almost like another planet. This picture makes me think of Pitty Pat on the moon. "HOUSTON... WE HAVE A CANINE!!!!!"

I have really enjoyed these walks we have been taking. After our time on the beach today, I noticed that every part of me was warm, but my ears! On the way home I thought.. wow, I should really buy a "Beachcomber Hat" to wear on our walks when it is chilly. Duh. I am an idiot. I am knitter.. why not knit myself one? I am so quick to knit for others, but not for myself. This is on my needles right now! It will be too chilly to walk tomorrow, but I hope to have this ready for Thursday when it is warmer.

Well, I will leave you with one last picture from our adventure today. My happy beach bum!!!

AND..... this is my 100th post this year!!! YAY me!!!!!

Beachcombers

Hey Y'all!

Well, the weather here has been very warm, so Pitty Pat and I decided to take advantage of it yesterday!
I had to get my hair cut and colored yesterday and then I had to make a quick run to the knitting store, The Knit and Purl.  After those errands were out of the way, I decided that Pitty Pat and I needed to go for a walk on the beach.

It was much needed! Here's some pics from our beach adventure yesterday. It was so nice. The fog was rolling in and hardly anyone was out. Pitty Pat had the best time running and jumping. When we took a moment to rest, I got a big 'ole wet sloppy kiss across the face. I think he was pleased!

And I was RUNNING!!!!

I likey the beachy!

Happy Baby!!!!

To top off our special beach walk, we went and got some ice cream afterwards. One of my sweet students gave me a gift card to Cold Stone Creamery. I got the Berry, Berry, Berry Good in a waffle bowl. YUM. The ice cream was yummy and topped off a great day!

My Mom just called from Charleston and is heading this way! There's no telling what we will get into today! I am hoping that tonight we can go look at Christmas lights. I just love to look at lights!

Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
